In the Sengoku period, Lord Daigo makes a pact with 12 demons to bring peace to the land—at the cost of his newborn son's body. Abandoned at birth, the child survives and becomes Hyakkimaru, a mysterious boy with prosthetic limbs and blades for arms. On his journey to reclaim what was stolen from him, he meets Dororo , a young orphan. Together, they face demons, both literal and within the human heart.
The anime had four different songs for its opening and ending themes. The first opening song "Kaen" (Flame) was written by Ziyoou-vachi specifically for the anime. Meanwhile, "Sayonara Gokko" (Make-Believe Goodbye) was written by amazarashi for the ending theme song of the anime. Asian Kung-Fu Generation sang the second opening song "Dororo," while Eve sang the second ending song "Anya" (Dark Night).
In 1969, Tezuka Productions created a 26-episode anime series based on a supernatural historical manga.
The story is based on Tezuka's original 1967 Dororo manga series. Vertical released the manga in a collected volume in 2012. A live-action film adaptation starring Kou Shibasaki and Satoshi Tsumabuki premiered in Japan in 2007.
