Kamina is a free spirit who wants to make a name for himself, while Simon is a timid young boy with no real aspirations. One day, Simon discovers a mysterious object during excavation work that turns out to be the key to ignite an ancient artifact of war called Lagann. With the help of Yoko Littner, a hot-blooded redhead who wields a massive gun and roams the world above, they fend off a surprise attack from the surface. After the battle, Simon and Kamina are prompted to explore the wastelands of the surface with Yoko. They soon join the fight against the "Beastmen," humanoid creatures that terrorize humanity in powerful robots called "Gunmen." Despite facing challenges and setbacks, they bravely fight these new enemies alongside other survivors to reclaim the surface while unraveling a galaxy-sized mystery.
