The renowned witch Shiny Chariot is highly admired by young witches worldwide. However, as they grow older, their opinions of her change, often labeling any mention of her as childish. Despite this, Atsuko Kagari enrolls at Luna Nova Magical Academy with the goal of becoming just like her idol. However, the academy is not all fun and games; it features tedious lectures, strict teachers, and students who mock Chariot. Additionally, Atsuko struggles with magic, which makes her feel like an outsider among her peers. Nevertheless, when a chance arises to prove herself, she seizes the opportunity and must now stop a rampaging dragon from destroying the entire academy.
Little Witch Academia is one of the four anime works that each received 38 million yen (about US$480,000) from the "2012 Young Animator Training Project." Just like in 2010 and 2011, the animation labor group received 214.5 million yen (US$2.65 million) from the Japanese governments Agency for Cultural Affairs, and it distributed most of those funds to studios who train young animators on-the-job.Positive response to the movie led Studio Trigger to run a Kickstarter funding a sequel, which surpassed its funding goal.
