Shinya Ohira is widely regarded as one of the world's top animators, known for his unique animation style that incorporates exaggerated motion, manipulated gravity and balance through different perspective shots, rapid camera movement, and unconventional angles. His boldly distorted and energetic drawing style has made his cuts instantly recognizable. Ohira began working as an animator over thirty years ago and has worked with several studios including Sunrise, Madhouse, and Pierrot.
In the early 1980s, Ohira's work mainly focused on action and effects cuts. However, it wasn't until he started applying his approach to solid objects, especially people, that his style truly flourished. His earliest example of this is a cut in episode 10 of The Hakkenden (1994). Other works showcase Ohira's animation skills to their fullest, including Junkers Come Here (1994), FLCL (2000), "Kids Story" in The Animatrix (2003), Fuujin Monogatari (2003), Mind Game (2004), "Wanwa" in Genius Party Beyond (2008), Redline (2009), Momo e no Tegami (2011), Ping Pong The Animations OP sequence (2014), Space Dandy (2014), and Night Is Short, Walk On Girl (2017).
One of Ohira's most distinctive trademarks is the "wobble," where animated objects expand and compress in a wobbly manner.
