In 1940, Kayoko was a young girl who had just started first grade. She was known for being somewhat of a crybaby and loved playing with friends and singing cute schoolyard chants. Occasionally, she would have fun with her three older brothers. Her mother was pregnant at the time, so Kayoko looked forward to becoming a big sister. However, she only partially understood the responsibility that came with it.
As the war effort grew, people were encouraged to be patriotic and support their country. Kayoko took this to heart and even contributed her favorite dolly, whose materials could help build explosives. As time passed, Kayoko saw how the war had affected not only her life but also those around her. However, nothing could prepare her for what was to come in 1945. The bleak times that were soon to follow would be a stark contrast to the optimism of earlier years.
