In Japan during the 10th century, the movie depicts Kyoto during the Heian era. This era was marked by significant events such as widespread death, overflowing gutters with corpses, abandoned children in the mountains, and watchful wild dogs outside the city. Despite being portrayed in numerous literary and artistic works, this era is often overlooked due to its grim reality. However, Katabuchi's latest project brings us back to this time in Kyoto, revealing the city's dark past during the plague epidemics that ravaged it.
