Roanapur is a notorious city in Thailand known for its high levels of crime, corruption, and illegal activities. It's infamous for being the hub of criminal operations fueled by local syndicates. Rokurou Okajima, a Japanese businessman, gets caught up in this dangerous world when he travels to Southeast Asia on a delivery trip. He is captured by Black Lagoon, a mercenary group operating in Roanapur, and used as a bargaining chip in negotiations that ultimately fail. Betrayed by his former employer, Rokurou decides to join Black Lagoon to survive. The story follows him as he adapts to his new environment and prepares for the violence and hardship ahead. Black Lagoon is an intense thriller that explores themes of morality and virtue while showing how people can transform into ruthless mercenaries in order to survive.
Black Lagoon was released on DVD by Geneon Entertainment from May 22, 2007 to September 18, 2007. Following a 2008 agreement regarding distribution rights, Funimation Entertainment also published the series in the same format on August 19, 2008. The company later released the anime on Blu-ray on November 17, 2015.
