An anime called "The Mourning Children" has released a new pilot video on Sunao Katabuchi's stream.

Three additional videos were simultaneously broadcasted.

On Thursday, the official YouTube channel of Sunao Katabuchi's Contrail Studio released a new teaser pilot video for their upcoming feature-length anime film titled "The Mourning Children: Nagiko and the Girls Wearing Tsurubami Black" (Tsurubami-Iro no Nagiko-tachi).

Three videos were shown on the channel which included illustrations from a storyboard as well as footage from behind the scenes.

In 2017, Katabuchi started working on the project which takes place in Kyoto during the 10th century, the time when "The Pillow Book" was penned by Sei Shōnagon.

In the movie trailer, it was hinted at that there would be an outbreak in the plot, as well as mentioning Sei Shōnagon as one of the characters alongside names such as Koretada, Tokinaka, Chikatada, and Takaie.

The film has been directed by Yoshihiro Katabuchi, who has written the script as well. Chie Uratani has been serving as directing assistant on the film, which has been translated as co-director in the pilot film. Masashi Andō has been appointed as chief animation director for the film. Akira Senju has been tasked with composing the music for the film, while Yūji Kaneko has been credited as art director on the project. In previous videos for the film, Toshiharu Mizutani was credited as art director.

In September 2019, Katabuchi founded Contrail, an anime studio that is currently producing a film. Manabu Ohtsuka from MAPPA is serving as Contrail 's representative director, while Katabuchi is a member of its board of directors. The company is situated in Tokyo's Suginami ward.

Katabuchi is known for directing several popular anime series like Black Lagoon, Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail, Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage, Mai Mai Miracle, Princess Arete, and Meiken Lassie. He also wrote and directed In This Corner of the World, which received critical acclaim when it was released in November 2016. In December 2019, an extended version of the film called In This Corner (and Other Corners) of the World was released in Japan.
