Ash Lynx, previously known as Aslan Jade Callenreese, was once a runaway who was rescued by Dino Golzine, the notorious leader of the mafia. Now 17 years old and in charge of his own gang, Ash discovers that Banana Fish, an enigmatic drug with the same name as what his older brother Griffin has muttered since returning from Iraq, is connected to their past. However, Dino sends his men to seize the drug from Ash at a hidden bar he uses for refuge. At the bar, Skip, Ash's friend, introduces him to Shunichi Ibe and Eiji Okumura, two Japanese photographers documenting American street gangs. Their conversation is interrupted when Shorter Wong, one of Ash's associates, calls to alert him about Dino's plans. Soon after, Dino's men raid the bar and kidnap Skip and Eiji. Now, Ash must find a way to rescue his friends and continue investigating Banana Fish, but his history with the mafia may hinder his success.

The anime was announced as part of Akimi Yoshida's 40th anniversary commemoration project in October 2017.
