Usagi Tsukino is a typical student who frequently cries and makes mistakes on tests. However, her mundane existence takes an unexpected turn when she saves a cat with a moon-shaped mark on its head from harm. The feline later discloses that their encounter was not happenstance; rather, it was preordained that Usagi would become Sailor Moon, a protector of the Earth with extraordinary abilities to defend against malevolent monsters sent by Queen Beryl of the Dark Kingdom. To do so, she is given a magical brooch that enables her to transform. Nevertheless, mastering her new powers and battling villains are not the only challenges Usagi faces. She must also locate the missing princess of the Moon Kingdom, unite with other Sailor Guardians, and retrieve the Legendary Silver Crystal in order to save the planet from impending doom.

The series won the 1992 Animage's Anime Grand Prix Award.
