In 196 After Colony, a year following the conclusion of the intergalactic war, Earth and its colonies are in a state of stasis. The Gundam mobile suits, which were once used by heroes Duo Maxwell, Heero Yuy, Trowa Barton, and Quatre Raberba Winner during the conflict, are no longer needed. These warriors decide to destroy their weapons by launching them into the sun's surface. However, before they can reach their destination, peace is shattered when Mariemaia Khushrenada-the only child of the former tyrannical aristocrat Treize-emerges and abducts diplomat Relena Peacecraft. She announces plans for "Operation Meteor," with the intention of fulfilling her father's world domination plot posthumously. The heroic pilots, including Zechs Marquise and his mobile suit Tallgeese, must reacquire their suits to wage one final battle against the Khushrenada dynasty, even fighting against former ally Wufei Chang, who is now aligned with Mariemaia's ambitions.
