In the early 21st century, what was once considered mythical or fictional has now become a systematic technology that is taught as a practical skill. At First High School, students are divided into two groups based on their entrance exam scores. Those who score well are placed in the First Course, while those with lower scores are reserved for the Second Course. The anime series "Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei" follows the experiences of Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba, siblings who attend First High School. While Miyuki excels in magic and is placed in the First Course, Tatsuya struggles with his magical abilities but possesses exceptional technical knowledge, physical prowess, and unique magic techniques, making him an irregular at a magical high school.

The anime closely follows the events of the first seven light novels (excluding the fifth novel: Summer Holiday Arc + 1). There are three video game adaptations of the series.
